Neven Ušumović

Neven Ušumović (Zagreb, 1972) grew up in Subotica and graduated in Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and Hungarian Studies in Zagreb, where he also studied Turkology. Since 2002, he has worked at the Umag Public Library. In Zagreb, he published the short story collections 7 mladih (1997), Makovo zrno (2009), Rajske ptice (2012), and Zlatna opeklina (2019; recipient of the “Kamov” Award of the Croatian Writers’ Association), as well as the novel Ekskurzija (2001).
In Belgrade, a selection of his short stories was published as a separate volume in 2014. In Novi Sad, a Hungarian translation of selected stories was published in 2021 under the title A csalogány nyelve (translated by István Ladányi). In Ljubljana, Slovenian translations of two of his short story collections have been published: Zlata opeklina (2022; translated by Sonja Polanc) and Rajske ptice (2025; translated by Seta Knop).
His short stories has been included in the American anthologies Best European Fiction (2009) and Zagreb Noir (2015). He translates from Hungarian and Slovenian into Croatian.
